Zanj Rebellion

869 CE – 883 CE · 14 years

One of history's largest slave revolts. Tens of thousands of East African slaves working the salt flats of southern Iraq rose under Ali ibn Muhammad, captured Basra, and established their own state for 14 years before the Abbasids suppressed them.
