Costa Rican Civil War

1948 CE

Brief but transformative 44-day civil war fought after the ruling government annulled elections. José Figueres led the victorious rebel forces, then abolished the military entirely — Costa Rica has had no standing army since, becoming one of the most stable democracies in Latin America.
