La Violencia (Colombia)

1948 CE – 1958 CE · 10 years

Decade-long Colombian civil war triggered by the assassination of Liberal leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán and the ensuing 'Bogotazo' riots. Approximately 200,000-300,000 were killed. La Violencia directly laid the groundwork for the FARC and Colombia's subsequent decades of armed conflict.
