Byzantine–Seljuk Wars
1048 CE – 1081 CE · 33 years
The Seljuk Turks inflicted a catastrophic defeat on the Byzantine Empire at the Battle of Manzikert (1071), opening Anatolia to Turkish settlement. This loss directly triggered the Byzantine appeal to the West that led to the First Crusade.
