Byzantine–Sassanid War of 602–628

602 CE – 628 CE · 26 years

The final and most devastating Roman-Persian war. The Sassanids conquered the Levant and Egypt before Heraclius launched a dramatic counter-offensive into Persia itself. The war exhausted both empires, leaving them fatally vulnerable to the Arab-Islamic conquests.
