Winter War

1939 CE – 1940 CE · 1 year

Stalin invaded Finland expecting a quick victory, but Finnish forces under Marshal Mannerheim inflicted devastating casualties using ski troops, Molotov cocktails, and knowledge of the terrain. Though Finland ultimately ceded territory, the war humiliated the Red Army and may have encouraged Hitler's invasion plans.
