Li Yuan and his son Li Shimin overthrew the Sui Dynasty and then defeated numerous rival warlords to reunify China under the Tang Dynasty. Li Shimin's brilliant generalship laid the foundation for what became China's most celebrated golden age of poetry, trade, and cosmopolitanism.
