Shining Path Insurgency

1980 CE – 2000 CE · 20 years

The Maoist Shining Path waged a brutal insurgency in Peru's highlands, killing nearly 70,000 people — mostly indigenous peasants caught between the guerrillas and the military. Leader Abimael Guzmán's capture in 1992 effectively ended the movement.
