After helping destroy the Assyrian Empire, Nebuchadnezzar II expanded Babylon into the dominant Near Eastern power. He conquered Judah, destroyed Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem (586 BC), and deported the Jewish elite in the famous Babylonian Captivity.
