Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and destroyed the Visigothic Kingdom in a lightning campaign. Within seven years, nearly all of the Iberian Peninsula fell under Muslim control, beginning almost 800 years of Islamic civilization in Al-Andalus.
