Hungarian Revolution
1956 CE
Spontaneous nationwide revolt against Soviet-imposed communist rule. After briefly establishing a reformist government, the uprising was crushed by 5,000 Soviet tanks in Operation Whirlwind. 2,500 Hungarians and 700 Soviet soldiers were killed; 200,000 Hungarians fled abroad.
