French Conquest of Algeria

1830 CE – 1847 CE · 17 years

France invaded Algeria ostensibly over a diplomatic insult and spent 17 years of brutal warfare conquering it. Abd el-Kader led a skillful resistance before his final defeat. Algeria became France's most important colony, with over a million French settlers eventually residing there.
