First Congo War

1996 CE – 1997 CE · 1 year

A coalition of African states and Congolese rebels overthrew Mobutu Sese Seko's 32-year dictatorship. The war was triggered by the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, when Hutu génocidaires fled to eastern Zaire. Kabila renamed the country the Democratic Republic of Congo.
