The PRC's military takeover of de facto independent Tibet. A force of 40,000 battle-hardened PLA troops overwhelmed 4,000 poorly armed Tibetan defenders at the Battle of Chamdo. The young Dalai Lama was forced to accept Chinese sovereignty in exchange for promises of autonomy.
