Battles of Khalkhin Gol

1939 CE

Undeclared border war between Japan and the Soviet Union on the Manchurian-Mongolian frontier. Zhukov's decisive combined-arms victory — the first of its kind in modern warfare — convinced Japan to expand southward instead of attacking the USSR, profoundly shaping WWII strategy.
