Catherine the Great's Russia inflicted devastating defeats on the Ottoman Empire, gaining control of the northern Black Sea coast and Crimea. The Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca gave Russia the right to intervene on behalf of Ottoman Christians — a pretext used for a century of future wars.
