Napoleon III installed Austrian Archduke Maximilian as Emperor of Mexico while the U.S. was distracted by its Civil War. After French withdrawal, Maximilian was captured and executed, restoring Juárez's republic. The Battle of Puebla (Cinco de Mayo) is celebrated to this day.
