El Hadj Umar Tall's Jihad

1852 CE – 1864 CE · 12 years

The Toucouleur cleric El Hadj Umar Tall launched a jihad in 1852 that carved out a Sahelian empire from Senegal across the Niger. He was checked by the French at Medina in 1857 but took Ségou in 1861 and Hamdullahi in 1862 before dying in 1864.
