Sri Lankan Civil War

1983 CE – 2009 CE · 26 years

A 26-year ethnic conflict between the Sinhalese-majority government and the Tamil Tigers, who pioneered suicide bombing as a tactic. The LTTE controlled a de facto state in the north before being destroyed in a brutal final offensive in 2009 that killed tens of thousands of civilians.
