Rif War

1921 CE – 1926 CE · 5 years

Berber leader Abd el-Krim defeated a Spanish army of 20,000 at Annual (1921) — one of the worst colonial defeats in history — and proclaimed an independent Rif Republic. It took a combined Franco-Spanish force of 250,000 and the use of chemical weapons to finally defeat him.
