Marcomannic Wars

166 CE – 180 CE · 14 years

Germanic and Sarmatian tribes broke through the Danube frontier and penetrated deep into Roman territory, even reaching northern Italy. Emperor Marcus Aurelius spent most of his reign fighting these wars, famously writing his Meditations in his campaign tent.
