First Barbary War
1801 CE – 1805 CE · 4 years
The young United States fought its first overseas war against the Barbary pirates of North Africa who demanded tribute for safe passage. The war produced the Marines' famous march 'to the shores of Tripoli' and established the U.S. as a naval power willing to project force abroad.
